The MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) is an internationally recognized facility at the forefront of plasma physics and fusion energy research. It is located on the main MIT campus in Cambridge MA and comprises a team of almost 200 top-tier students, scientists, and engineers jointly pursuing fusion research at national laboratory-like scale. The PSFC recently announced a new, accelerated pathway to fusion energy that is based on the development and demonstration of the world’s highest performing superconducting fusion magnets and the design of the first net-energy fusion device: the SPARC tokamak. The PSFC is undertaking searches for exceptional individuals who want to work in the fast-paced, team-oriented environment of the SPARC project to achieve net fusion energy on an aggressive timescale to help combat global climate change. The candidate’s primary responsibility in the procurement area will be to ensure through rigorous process control that materials and services required for the SPARC project from external vendors are obtained efficiently and as flawlessly as possible. The candidate will be expected to interface effectively across MIT to fulfill this role – including with the SPARC technical team, PSFC fiscal office, and MIT procurement office – as well as to work closely with external vendors. Duties will include: remaining continuously in communication with the SPARC chief engineer and research project principal investigators while executing complex acquisitions of major materials, equipment and fabricated equipment for the SPARC project; Working closely with PSFC technical staff to identify and screen prospective vendors, prepare requests for proposal or quotation, and participate in bid reviews. Working closely with procurement office, establish the preferred contract type for a particular procurement (cost plus fixed fee, fix price, time & materials, etc.) and fee and incentives structures. Identifying appropriate deliverables, schedule milestones, and payment schedule consistent with contract type. With technical input from PSFC technical staff, prepare all required selection-of-source (justification of selection; sole source justification when applicable) documentation in compliance with MIT purchasing practices. Collaborating with PSFC fiscal and MIT procurement offices to ensure smooth purchase order issuance; communicating with vendors on order details, schedule, delivery details, and payments; and tracking, handling, and documenting shipments/services to PSFC. With fiscal office, track vendor progress on contracts, with attention to schedule/milestone performance, potential delays or cost overruns, and potential non-compliance with terms and conditions of contract.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, at least 2 years’ direct or related experience preferred. Engineering/technical degree highly desirable. The candidate should be well organized, detail oriented, and have a demonstrated track record of effectively managing and tracking many parallel tasks. The ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and by email is required. Knowledge of MIT or similar research and engineering environments is highly desirable, particularly in areas involving fiscal and procurement processes or external vendor relations. The ability to work proficiently with computer productivity software (e.g. Word, Excel, email clients) and an ability to rapidly learn MIT and PSFC internal procurement procedures, software and systems are required.
Salary Range: $60,000 – $72,000
